Have you ever felt like you care more about a project than your client does? Like they're only paying half-attention while you're fighting to move their goals forward? It happens more often than you'd think — and it's one of the most frustrating dynamics in creative work. In this episode, we explore what it feels like when clients are phoning it in, why it happens, and what you can do to re-engage them before the work suffers and your team's morale takes a hit.

There's a special kind of frustration that comes when you realize you're working harder on someone else's project than they are. The meetings where they're distracted, the feedback that arrives three weeks late, the sudden flood of opinions after months of silence — these aren't just annoying inconveniences. They're symptoms of a deeper problem that impacts everything from creative quality to team morale to actual ROI.

In this episode, we explore the uncomfortable reality of working with disengaged clients and why it matters more than you might think. We break down the root causes — from burnout and fragmentation to simple lack of understanding about what good collaboration requires — and examine how disengagement creates a ripple effect that damages the work, the process, and the people involved. But this isn't just about venting frustrations. Tune in as we share practical approaches for reigniting client engagement, from reframing conversations around outcomes to establishing clear decision-makers and structured review phases, and most importantly, how to protect your team's energy and the project's integrity.

Classic Hot Toddy

Classic Hot Toddy

Whiskey
Hot toddy cocktail with lemon slice and cinnamon stick in glass teacup with bourbon bottle, warm winter drink photography for Speak Easy Podcast.
The Classic Hot Toddy is the ultimate comfort drink — a warm, soothing elixir that's been easing cold nights and scratchy throats for generations. At its heart, it's beautifully simple: whiskey, honey, lemon, and hot water come together to create something that feels equal parts remedy and indulgence. The whiskey provides warmth and depth, honey adds natural sweetness, and fresh lemon juice brings bright acidity that keeps everything balanced. What makes this drink so enduring is its adaptability — adjust the honey for more sweetness or add extra lemon for more zing until it's exactly right.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup water
  • 1 ½ ounces whiskey
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons honey, to taste
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons lemon juice, to taste
  • 1 lemon round
  • Optional: 1 cinnamon stick, for garnish

Preparation

  1. In a tea kettle or small saucepan, bring the water to a simmer. Pour the hot water into a mug.
  2. Add the whiskey, 2 teaspoons of honey and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice. Stir until the honey has disappeared into the hot water. Taste, and add 1 teaspoon honey for more sweetness, and/or 1 teaspoon more lemon juice for more zing.
  3. Garnish with a lemon round and cinnamon stick (if using).
