Classic Hot Toddy

Whiskey
Hot toddy cocktail with lemon slice and cinnamon stick in glass teacup with bourbon bottle, warm winter drink photography for Speak Easy Podcast.
The Classic Hot Toddy is the ultimate comfort drink — a warm, soothing elixir that's been easing cold nights and scratchy throats for generations. At its heart, it's beautifully simple: whiskey, honey, lemon, and hot water come together to create something that feels equal parts remedy and indulgence. The whiskey provides warmth and depth, honey adds natural sweetness, and fresh lemon juice brings bright acidity that keeps everything balanced. What makes this drink so enduring is its adaptability — adjust the honey for more sweetness or add extra lemon for more zing until it's exactly right.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup water
  • 1 ½ ounces whiskey
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons honey, to taste
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons lemon juice, to taste
  • 1 lemon round
  • Optional: 1 cinnamon stick, for garnish

Preparation

  1. In a tea kettle or small saucepan, bring the water to a simmer. Pour the hot water into a mug.
  2. Add the whiskey, 2 teaspoons of honey and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice. Stir until the honey has disappeared into the hot water. Taste, and add 1 teaspoon honey for more sweetness, and/or 1 teaspoon more lemon juice for more zing.
  3. Garnish with a lemon round and cinnamon stick (if using).
