When Should You Not Play by the Rules?

Business
Jen and Karen are sitting side by side at a bar, facing each other with drinks in their hands.
Most rules are made up. Obviously there are rules you shouldn’t take this approach with, like public safety laws or scientific principles, but when it comes to arbitrary rules that are society- or self-imposed, eventually these “rules” hinder our growth. Especially in the world of business, creative thinking and innovation can’t flourish if the status quo isn’t challenged. This week, we chat about when we learned to stop playing by the rules, which rules we’ve kicked to the curb, and why breaking the rules is a gamble worth taking.

Carving out your own path as a business owner demands a little rule breaking from time to time. Whether it’s a social norm or personal directive, it’s easy for our ways of being to spiral down the rabbit hole from routine to rule to barrier to success. If you find yourself stuck in that place, it’s time to start poking holes in your modus operandi.

We’ll be the first to admit this process isn’t easy 一 breaking rules is an exercise in resiliency. Routines can be comforting, but placing the rules and assumptions you operate from under a microscope allows you to uncover new approaches to old problems and hidden roadblocks. This episode, join us as we explore the lessons we’ve learned by not playing by the rules.

Strawberry Mule

Strawberry Mule

Vodka
Lime and strawberry slices arranged around a bottle of ginger beer and a copper mug.
The Strawberry Mule offers a delightful balance of sweet, tart, and spicy flavors. Fresh strawberries add a natural sweetness and a touch of fruitiness, while lime juice brings a refreshing tartness. Vodka provides a smooth, clean base, and the ginger beer adds a spicy, effervescent finish. Using fresh lime juice and muddled strawberries, this cocktail makes for a noteworthy addition to the Mule family.
