Leading with Your Personal Values

Leading with Your Personal Values
Everyone has values regardless of whether you’ve explored and articulated them or not. When we spend time with people, we can almost see their personal values come alive. They really are at the core of our identities and have influence beyond what we often acknowledge. We discuss what it means to lead with your personal values.

If you’ve listened to our podcast before, you know that we never miss an opportunity to discuss our values. They’re the foundation for how we function as individuals and as professionals. As business owners, our values are what creates a cohesive and sustainable space for employees and customers, but they also act as boundaries. However, it’s important to take a moment to ask yourself and your team: Are we actively practicing these values?

It takes time and consistency to translate your values into action. But having declared and well-executed values allows for greater unity overall, and a stronger end-product – whatever industry you’re in. Join us as we discuss our own values, in life and in business, as well as how we can determine these with our own teams.

Penicillin
Penicillin was the cure of the 20th century, but this cocktail just might be the cure of the 21st century. With the unpredictable Midwest weather, it’s almost impossible not to come down with a cold. Let’s boost our immune systems with some natural remedies. Mix your scotch, lemon juice, honey syrup, ginger, and you’ll be healed. (Or, at least you’ll feel healed.)

Ingredients

  • 4 thin slices of ginger, peeled and about 3/4 inch round
  • 2 oz. blended scotch
  • 1 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 oz. honey syrup
  • 1/2 oz. single malt scotch
  • Ice, for serving (clear ice works best!)
  • Candied ginger or ginger root and a lemon peel, to garnish

Preparation

  1. In the bottom of a cocktail shaker, muddle (gently mash) the ginger with a muddler or wooden spoon until it is mashed and juices are released, about 15 seconds.
  2. To the cocktail shaker, add the blended scotch, lemon juice and honey syrup with a handful of ice. Shake until cold.
  3. Strain the drink into a lowball glass with one large ice cube.
  4. Carefully pour the single malt scotch over the back of a spoon just above the surface of the drink, creating a layer on top. Garnish with candied ginger, ginger root or lemon peel and serve.

Are we still entrepreneurs? We both own established businesses–and we're successful mid-career creatives–so we don't really fit into the trendy description of a startup that seems to be all…
Recognition. As leaders, we recognize success and achievement in others as second nature. As individuals, we aren't great being on the receiving end—especially as women. But it's…
Recognizing change can feel like a hopeless task sometimes because we're evaluating the changes in real time. But the bottom line—we must grow.
