Entrepreneurial Hindsight is 20/20 – Featuring Guest Kelly Rossman-McKinney
Entrepreneurs want to know it all. But, looking back at the beginning of our careers, it's clear that hindsight is 20/20, and that identifying our blind spots only helps us grow. This episode, we're delighted to host Kelly Rossman-McKinney, one of the most impressive and inspiring communicators we've ever met. We dive into her professional journey: how life for women business owners has changed over the years, and how even CEOs need to ask for help now and then.

As we look back on our careers, it becomes clear that there's no way to forecast every change that will come our way. Industries shift, trends come and go and we can't pretend to know it all. How can we identify our blind spots and fill the gaps of what we don't know?

This episode's guest, Kelly Rossman-McKinney, is an experienced communicator with more than a few notches in her belt. From former co-founder and retired CEO of a PR firm to current communications director for Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel (with a legislative run in between), Kelly has a detailed background in communicating, writing and speaking strategically. But just like any of us, there's a long list of things she wishes she had known starting out in her career.

How can acknowledging our blind spots help us grow in our careers? Kelly shares how her industry has shifted over the decades, what she learned from a legislative run and her advice for entrepreneurs searching for the elusive and unattainable work-life balance.

London Fog Latte

London Fog Latte

Mocktail
London Fog Latte
Lavender, vanilla and brown sugar? Definitely our cup of tea. London Fog Latte is a sweet, versatile mocktail that would pair with a morning email scan or an evening reminiscing with old friends. Bitter notes of Earl Grey tea balance out the sweetness, and a sprinkle of dried lavender adds another layer of complexity with a calming aroma and aftertaste.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. strongly brewed Earl Grey tea
  • 1/2 tsp. dried lavender
  • 4 oz. steamed milk (any kind)
  • 1 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract

Preparation

  1. Brew Earl Grey tea and lavender together, and steep for 3 minutes (or according to tea instructions).
  2. Remove tea bag and strain out the lavender.
  3. If steaming milk at home, use a microwave but don't let the milk boil over.
  4. Stir in remaining ingredients until combined. Serve warm.

Are we still entrepreneurs? We both own established businesses–and we're successful mid-career creatives–so we don't really fit into the trendy description of a startup that seems to be all…

Recognizing change can feel like a hopeless task sometimes because we're evaluating the changes in real time. But the bottom line—we must grow.
