Plans, Endgames And Questions We Didn't Know Existed—Featuring Special Guest Gabrielle Lawrence
What do you think about when I say "plan ahead?" For us, planning a project and managing the mayhem of parenthood come to mind. While we love a good plan, sometimes it's challenging to stay ahead of a moving target. This week we welcome a special guest, attorney Gabrielle Lawrence. She's a master planner in her personal life and an estate planning attorney professionally, which takes the concept of planning ahead to a whole new level. We get the privilege of talking with her about how she approaches planning ahead, day and night, for herself, her family and her clients.

"Planning ahead" means different things to different people. Whether you're a small business owner or an estate planner, it's all about identifying your endgame. Sometimes you just need a kick in the pants to sit down and identify what that endgame is, exactly.

This episode's guest, Gabrielle Lawrence, is an attorney specializing in business, probate and estate planning (all while writing restaurant reviews, serving on a board and parenting a son who just turned one). Her mantra: We're never done planning ahead. Both in business and on a personal level, you don't just get to plan just once—it's an evolving practice.

As entrepreneurs, we need to remember that long-term planning isn't just for us. (And when it comes to estate planning, it's never for us.) It's for our families, staff, business and clients.

This week, Gabrielle tackles some of our toughest questions: Are we ever really done planning? How long should we wait before making a big decision? And what do meal prep and estate planning have in common?

Buenos Dias

Mocktail
Buenos Dias
Many of us write out plans with a cup of coffee in hand—why not make it a coffee mocktail? Say good morning with Buenos Dias, a mocktail recipe that comes to us from The Cascade Room in Vancouver. The dark, bitter coffee taste adds a hint of complexity to this non-alcoholic drink, while mango and cilantro provide a refreshing, fruity balance. With a touch of caffeine, this mocktail will help you get down to business and start planning ahead.

Ingredients

  • 3 oz. cold brew coffee
  • 1/2 fresh mango, pitted, plus additional for garnish
  • 1 sprig of cilantro, plus additional for garnish
  • 1 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz. agave nectar

Note: Original recipe called for apricot, but we swapped for mango. Try it with your favorite combination of fruit and herb.

Preparation

  1. In a shaker, muddle the mango and cilantro.
  2. Add ice and pour in the remaining ingredients.
  3. Shake for about 15 seconds.
  4. Strain over ice in a couple glass.
  5. Garnish with fresh cilantro.
