Audiences, Flexibility, And The Future Of Public Broadcasting – Featuring Guest Susi Elkins
How can we balance the needs of our audiences and our own organizations so that we all win? Our guest Susi Elkins knows a thing or two about that. Susi is the director of broadcasting and general manager of WKAR Public Media. We discuss a slew of topics Susi encounters in her everyday work, including the growth of women in broadcasting and leadership, transitioning to at-home content development, and how we can all maintain an engaged audience – even during a pandemic.

This episode, we are joined by a very special guest: Susi Elkins, director of broadcasting and general manager at WKAR Public Media in East Lansing, Michigan. As station manager, she oversees all of the station's programming including original content and production, as well as partnerships across all of WKAR's broadcasting platforms.

During her 25 years at WKAR, Susi has learned a thing or two about flexibility. Not only does she identify programming to match the diverse needs of thousands of audience members across ages and backgrounds, but she produces and curates content that propels the station forward.

We chat with Susi about a broad range of topics, from the growth of women in broadcasting to the importance of flexibility in our everyday work. Susi also discusses how WKAR went from producing content in an in-studio, team environment to creating content at home overnight, and what the future of WKAR and public broadcasting might look like down the line. Grab your cocktail and tune in for this can't-miss guest episode.

Tiger Balm
If there's one thing we learned during self-quarantine, it's how to make a good drink at home. One of our latest favorites is Tiger Balm: a tequila and lime cocktail that packs a citrus punch, but goes down easy. Made with Oleo-Saccharum, a citrus-infused simple syrup, this cocktail is just exotic enough to help you get away from it all for a brief moment.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. Espolon Tequila Reposado
  • 0.75 oz. Lime Juice
  • 0.75 oz. Grapefruit Szechuan Oleo Saccharum
  • Club soda (optional)
  • A lime wheel and Tajin, to garnish.

Preparation

  1. Add ingredients to an ice-filled shaker.
  2. Shake well and strain into a tall glass.
  3. Top with soda if you'd like, and garnish with a lime wheel and a pinch of Tajin.
